Week 4: Titanic 2.0 Design Challenge

This week we will continue working on the design process, but this week you will actually get to go through the steps! Your design challenge is to... Design and build a boat that can withstand stormy waters without losing any passengers. The designer of the boat that can withstand the stormiest waters will be the winner of the design challenge!

Objectives:
  • Students will define the problem of the given design challenge.
  • Students will develop and design a solution to the challenge through researching and sketching.
  • Students will build and test their prototype.
  • Students will present their final solution to the class. 
  • Students will use deductive reasoning, inferencing, and problem solving skills to create a boat that can keep its passengers afloat during stormy weather.

Activities:
In class day 1:
  • Receive your Design Challenge from Miss Good
  • Research Past Shipwreck Causes and Boat Designs
  • Sketch and Plan your Boat Design
  • Complete numbers 1-3 on the worksheet
  • Online Sketchpad
​ In class day 2:
  • Bring your ruler to class
  • Build and Test your Boat
  • Evaluate your Boat Design
  • Share your Boat's Success with the Class to Determine the Design Challenge Champion!
  • Complete numbers 4-6 on the Worksheet
At home day 1:
  • Review your Design Challenge you will/ have completed this week
  • Research and Review Buoyant Force and What has Caused Other Boats to Sink in the Past
  • Read the 3 Articles Linked to the Right
  • Complete the Titanic 2.0 Research Review Form When you are Finished
At home day 2:
  • Marine Architects design boats and other types of vessels like submarines, oil platforms, and underwater robots. They can help design boats that can more safely transport large numbers of people.
